Originally built for the War of 1812, a war that merits pages and pages of Canadian History but only a brief mention in the American curriculum (they lost), this tower had the addition put on top (above the stone) to help guard the St. John harbour during World War I.
I was initially very disappointed when it was foggy during my photo tour of St. John. However, I'm thrilled with many of the shots, so hey, fog is okay with me.

I think the fog adds to the history you have described well. I like the added touch! Wonderful perspective!!

Fab shot Walt and we done an investigation in a Martello Tower over here in England. They are great locations late at night with a camcorder.

This is awesome Walt, love the fog, it really works. Gives the image a war type feel for me...I'm thinking Braveheart with the Scots in one of those many battle scenes.... P.S. Thaks for your commenst and for visiting my blog this week!

Fog is great, well it can be sometimes..... I think this shot really does work, as the fort looming above you in the fog really does give a sense of forboding, and what with its history - really good work

Fog is great for some types of photos, your Martello Tower is one of them. I'm sad to say that in our Québec history books the war of 1812 has a grand total of 2 lines! What a shame!

Very magical. I like the atmosphere created by the fog.

The fog definitely adds a lot to this image, like the mists of time encircling the old place with memories. It's a very compelling shot.

Fog is our friend Walt!! It sets the mood and gives us images that are ethereal with stories that touch us deeply... As this one does!! Fantastic job here Walt.
Love the mention of the war of 1812. If I remember correctly that was the war that Laura Secord had a hand in when she ran for miles to warn the British of a planned American attack?

@amy: You are correct...according to some versions, she even ran it with a cow...
Nice photo!

Methinks fog works very well in this case....a most fitting reminder of how important histories can be lost in the swirl of latter events, or, as VF puts it, the "mists of time"....thankfully there are heroes including yourself to champion the cause of truth-telling! :)

@Rebecca: Wow, I'm touched...a hero. Thank you!
I think the fog worked perfectly in this shot, it adds character to the old tower. You almost never get the perfect weather to take your shots, but you just have to make the best of it. In this case you certainly did.
